Surf Parade set for transformation and open for business

26 July 2016

Broadbeach’s Surf Parade is set to undergo an exciting transformation, creating a premier beachside event and dining destination.

All businesses and restaurants will remain open and accessible to foot traffic during the $4.5 million place making project, which begins on 1 August.

Divisional Councillor Paul Taylor said the redevelopment, which was well supported by the local community, would deliver a fresh, new look for a focal space in the centre of Broadbeach.

“During community consultation for the Broadbeach Core Business Precinct Master Plan, 83 per cent of survey respondents showed support for this project,” he said.

“Broadbeach will be a major staging post for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™. This transformation will deliver more greenery, decorative lighting, outdoor dining areas and flexible event areas so that by 2018, Broadbeach will truly shine when the eyes of the world are upon us.

“The space between Queensland Avenue and Victoria Avenue will become more pedestrian-focused, with safer and more convenient connections to the rest of the precinct.”

Surf Parade will be closed to traffic to allow for major underground infrastructure works.

Cr Taylor said he appreciated the patience of Broadbeach businesses and customers as the works progressed.

“We understand there will be some inconvenience during works, however we know the end result will be a superb destination for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

Jan McCormick, CEO of Broadbeach Alliance, said the proposed development will enhance the already premier experience.

“We support the City of Gold Coast’s vision for the precinct and look forward to the enhancement of Surf Parade and the future growth this will subsequently deliver to Broadbeach,” she said.

The Broadbeach Jazz Weekend presented by The Oasis, August 20 and 21, will have an enhanced footprint with stages and roving entertainment covering Surf Parade, Broadbeach Mall, The Oasis and the Oracle precinct.

This is a two stage project, with first stage works due for completion by December ahead of the Christmas holiday season and the second stage running from late January 2017 until May 2017.
