The People’s Choice – Burleigh to GC Airport for Light Rail Stage 3

13 May 2016

Mayor Tom Tate today released results from the 2015 light rail stage three consultation – with at least 70 percent of those surveyed calling for a direct route from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads and on to the Gold Coast International Airport.

“It’s not surprising our residents support a coastal route to the airport. This is consistent with our City Transport Strategy and provides the best opportunity to connect our city,” Cr Tate said.

“Stage one has been an overwhelming success; stage two is under construction and we want the momentum to continue so stage three can be achieved.

“Extending this network is vital in easing congestion on roads, improving commute times, connecting key commercial centres and residential areas. It also opens up the southern corridor so far as investment along the light rail route.”

Cr Tate said the consultation was held in November and December last year and sought feedback on seven route options.

“We had 3606 submissions. Of these, 70 percent (2855 people) supported the next stage being Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. A further 70 percent (2522) of those surveyed called for the light rail to go from Burleigh to Gold Coast Airport,’’ he said.

“The people have spoken.’’

Cr Tate said he would look to include $600,000 in the 2016-17 City budget for route mapping and further feasibility studies.

The budget will be handed down in late June.
