Light Rail to Burleigh Heads: have your say

5 June 2017
The community is being asked to provide feedback on the proposed next stage of light rail between Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads.

Mayor Tom Tate said if funding was approved by the State and Commonwealth governments, construction of the 6.8km extension could start in 2020.

The proposed light rail route from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads, known as Stage 3A, follows the Gold Coast Highway.

“I have ruled out any options along the Esplanade at Miami or Burleigh,” said Mayor Tate. “We are taking light rail straight down the existing Gold Coast Highway.”

Stations will be spaced to ensure a balance between easy public access to the network and efficient travel times.

Two options for an interim terminus in Burleigh Heads are being considered. One is on the Gold Coast Highway near Burleigh Heads Hotel, the second is behind the bowls club.

“This is part of an integrated public transport network for the city,” said Mayor Tate. “Passengers will be able to conveniently transfer between light rail and the bus network to get around the city.’’

Planning for future stages to Coolangatta continue. Our focus is to get the route to Burleigh Heads sorted, before we look further south.’’

Community consultation on Light Rail to Burleigh Heads is open until Friday 7 July at
