Gold Coast to welcome almost 200 new citizens during Queensland Week

4 June 2015

The Gold Coast is set to welcome almost 200 new Australians from 32 different countries this Saturday as they proudly participate in an Australian Citizenship Ceremony during Queensland Week.

Adding festivity to the formalities, a public celebration recognising the diverse cultures that call the Gold Coast home will coincide with the Chinatown Street Markets.

Mayor Tom Tate said Queensland Week was a great opportunity to showcase our multicultural community while providing a unique environment for a large outdoor Australian Citizenship Ceremony.

"In the last 12 months, the City has welcomed more than 2230 new Australian citizens on the Gold Coast," he said.

"For many, becoming an Australian citizen will be one of their most memorable moments of their lives; it was certainly a proud moment for me.

"I congratulate all our new citizens and their families on making their commitment to Australia on Saturday, and wish them well as they continue to forge a new life for themselves here on the Gold Coast.

"In celebrating Queensland Week, the community can share a sense of pride in being both an Australian and a Queenslander. It’s a time to reflect on how lucky we are to have this wonderful lifestyle, so come and celebrate what it means to you to be a Queenslander."

The combined Queensland Week and Chinatown Street Markets will take place in Gold Coast Chinatown, Young and Davenport Streets, Southport. The program includes:

  • 1pm – 2pm Ceremony: Official Australian Citizenship Ceremony (officiated by the Mayor).
  • 2pm – 10pm Entertainment: A stage program featuring a range of music and performances from across the world, plus roving entertainment and interactive activities for the whole family.
  • 2pm – 10pm Market: Our regular Chinatown Street Market will offer a range of multicultural street food, beverages and merchandise to purchase, with local traders extending their hours during event times.

A range of multicultural and Asian inspired food stalls will transform Chinatown into a vibrant street food scene as food and culture take over the streets of Southport.

The official City of Gold Coast celebration is supported by the Premier’s Department Queensland Week Sponsorship Program.

Free public parking is available at the Athol Paterson and Mal Burke car parks from 12pm.
