Cultural evolution hits historic milestone: beehive demolished
29 June 2016The city’ s ‘ cultural evolution’ passed a milestone today with the historic former Council administration building making way for the birth of a world-class amphitheatre and art-space.
“ The beehive, as it is affectionately known, has been demolished, replaced with community space as part of stage one of the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct,’ ’ said Mayor Tom Tate.
“ This is the last significant section of the 40-year-old administration building to be demolished. In its place, we will see an amphitheatre and stage that can cater for 850 patrons seated, to around 5000 guests standing.
“ In less than two years, this site will be the city’ s heart for artistic, cultural and civic celebration.
“I look forward to opening those community facilities for all to enjoy. I also look forward to the start of construction for the Chevron Island green bridge which is high on my agenda.’ ’
