City’s first ‘tunnel art gallery’ springs to life

6 December 2017

A “tunnel art gallery’’ has been created in Helensvale – one of the most ambitious youth art projects undertaken in the city’s history.

“Amazing. That’s the only way to describe it,’’ said Acting Mayor Donna Gates at today’s opening.

“The location was chosen as this is a major pedestrian transport corridor for locals. It will also be utilised by tens of thousands of Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games visitors accessing transport services at Helensvale.

“The gallery is testament to the exceptional young artists in our city. They should all feel very proud.’’

Known as the Helensvale Tunnel Gallery, it will help minimise graffiti and preserve the area for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.

Five artists from the City’s youth art and development program, Level Up, contributed artwork for the gallery, along with established Gold Coast artists Christian Salmon and Cathy Booth. The project also involved A.B. Paterson College and Helensvale State High School students.

Level Up artists involved in the project were: Lara Briddon, Nicola Daly, Claire Hastings, Melissa Spratt and Tamika Stephan.

The 2017 Level Up program concludes tonight with an exhibition and celebration for the young artists (18-25 years) at The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

The City has approved Level Up funding to allow 10 new artists to complete the program in 2018. A second studio will be activated as part of the 2018 program.

Level Up engages emerging young artists transitioning from school, work, or tertiary studies to a career in the creative industries sector on the Gold Coast. The program contributes to community development, cultural development and youth employment outcomes.

The 2017 artists activated retail space in Helensvale Plaza Shopping Centre that allowed them to showcase their work. Art pieces are available for sale at tonight’s Arts Centre event.

The exhibition is at: Panorama Suite, The Arts Centre Gold Coast from 6pm.
