City launches largest summer events calendar in history

City of Gold Coast today launched the largest summer events calendar in the city’s history.

“From the PGA Golf Championship on right now to the iconic Magic Millions Sales and Race Day, this summer is a smorgasbord of events and activities for everyone to enjoy,” said the Chair of Economic Development, Councillor Hermann Vorster.

“The city hosts more than 900 events annually, collectively delivering $200 million to the city. Events are the lifeblood of the Gold Coast so it’s important the community shows its support.”

Cr Vorster said the City strongly backed the live music industry and urged people to check out local venues for upcoming acts.

“In addition to the live music on offer at all the Christmas celebrations around the city, there are excellent gigs at places like Currumbin Soundlounge, The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Coolangatta Hotel, Miami Marketta and Village Markets. There are also plenty of pubs and clubs hosting regular acts,” he said.

Highlights this month include the low-cost school holiday and Christmas activities at City parks, libraries and community centres.

On New Year’s Eve, the Gold Coast sky will light up with a range of locations hosting firework celebrations - from Coomera in the north to Kirra in the south.

In January, experience the excitement of the Magic Millions Race Day and Sales and watch the serious athletes battle it out at the Gatorade Queensland Tri Series Triathlon and Burleigh Pro surf contest.

Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the variety and diverse offering of events during the festive and peak summer holiday period brought the city alive.

“This is a time for locals and visitors to explore the city’s rich calendar of events, coupled with the nation’s best climate, world-class facilities and friendly hospitality we are well-known for,’’ he said.

“Events are vital to our economy and often bridge gaps associated with dips in visitation throughout the year. The partnership approach of We Are Gold Coast and Destination Gold Coast working collaboratively to champion an all-inclusive destination offering is great.”
