Celebrate the Games at CBD Street Party

19 March 2018

The countdown is on as the city prepares to soak up the excitement of the Commonwealth Games at the CBD Street Party in Chinatown, Southport.

Mayor Tom Tate said the atmosphere would be electric and encouraged locals and visitors to stop in at the Street Party on their way to, or from, one of the Games events held in Southport.

“The CBD Street Party is the place to be during Games. It offers colour, cuisine and live music programmed by Bleach*, an incredible artistic installation by Festival 2018 and a big screen televising the Games,’’ he said.

“The free community celebration will run from morning to late evening, every day of the Games.”

There’s a daily line-up of the best local live music acts, from roots to reggae, folk to funk, and everything in between. Visitors will enjoy delicious food from one of the many local restaurants and food trucks and be mesmerised by the jaw-dropping Museum of the Moon.

All the music, food and fun is set against the backdrop of Museum of the Moon, an incredible seven-metre-wide, floating moon sculpture with detailed NASA imagery on its surface. After stunning millions of people across the globe, this glorious silvery moon journeys to Australia for the first time as part of Festival 2018. Bathe in the moonlight and listen to a surround-sound composition featuring archive audio from the moon landings, by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones.

Museum of the Moon is created by internationally acclaimed United Kingdom (UK) artist Luke Jerram who operates at the intersection of art and science.

Bleach* Artistic Director Louise Bezzina said the CBD Street Party had locked in some outstanding acts to get the party started and would feature live music from Cheap Fakes, Ivey, Aquila Young and many more.

“At any point during the 12 day party you can dance the night away or kick back and relax with some of Australia’s best musical acts,” said Louise.
