Celebrate Australia Day in a cool new way

19 January 2017

The City’s iconic Australia Day celebrations have moved to a new time and location this year, with a twilight event at Broadwater Parklands in Southport.

Everyone’s invited to pack a picnic rug and head to the parklands in the cool of the afternoon for a host of fun activities at the alcohol-free event from 4pm.

Mayor Tom Tate said the Broadwater Parklands was the ideal location for the family-friendly event.

“Holding it in the evening means people can head to the beach for the day then enjoy all the activities at a cooler time of the day,” he said.

“The all-nations food truck feast will provide plenty of dinner options for hungry families and the night will finish with the city’s only fireworks display.”

Activities include the JJ Richards “Aussie Sports Zone” with sports fun from Gold Coast Suns, Gold Coast Titans and Queensland Cricket.

Take a stroll down the pier to hear music from local performers including Juzzie Smith, Dan Carroll, Eleea Navarro and Jackson James Smith.

On the way, grab a sausage sandwich from the long Aussie BBQ or a sweet Aussie treat – like a lamington - from Reid Street Kitchen.

People attending are invited to upload a photo from the event to the City’s Instagram page and use the hashtag #ausdaygc to be in  the $400 Coles Myer voucher competition.

Australia Day runs from 4pm and concludes with fireworks at 7.45pm.

For easy travel, plan ahead and jump on the G:link. You can also make your journey active and cycle, skate or scoot to the event.

Free parking is available at Broadwater Parklands and at Carey Park.

The event is proudly supported by JJ Richards, Nine Gold Coast News and 92.5 Gold FM.
